Puppy braves Hurricane Harvey in tiny red bucket, other pets abandoned

Updated

Hurricane Harvey, which made landfall Friday night as a Category 4, has caused catastrophic damage, flooding and more to hard-hit parts of Texas. With winds up to 130 miles per hour, the "major weather event" has also been responsible for a handful of deaths so far.

On Monday, as the storm weakened and moved up through the state, the extent of the storm's destruction emerged on social media. In light of the devastating impact, one Instagrammer is going viral for his funny and creative way to transport his puppy.

Manuel's puppy Kiwi was too little to brave Harvey's rising flood waters, so he made the pup a boat out of a bucket. In the Instagram post, Kiwi can be seen happily braving the flood waters in his red bucket, assisted by his owner splashing around in rain boots.

However, despite the lighthearted footage, other kinds of footage depicted more heartbreaking scenes. Just today, a photo taken by a reporter out of Houston went viral, showing two abandoned dogs longing for their families in a boat. Despite the upsetting shot, the reporter expects the animals' owners to return.

And more recently, a hawk took shelter from the storm in an abandoned taxi -- more on that in the video above.
