Steve Mnuchin's wife Louise Linton goes on Instagram tirade after being slammed for touting fashion labels

Updated

Actress Louise Linton, who married Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin in June, learned the hard way what not to do on social media.

Linton, who is married to the man who is fifth in the presidential line of succession, posted a now-deleted photograph of herself and her new hubby stepping out of a taxpayer-funded airplane during his visit to Fort Knox on Monday. While there was no problem with the photo itself, it was the 36-year-old's caption that sparked controversy.

Instagram

"Great #daytrip to #Kentucky!" she wrote, according to New York Magazine journalist Yashar Ali. "#nicest #people #beautiful #countryside #rolandmouret pants #tomford sunnies #hermesscarf #valentinorockstudheels #valentino #usa."

While Linton has tagged designers she's worn in previous posts before she got married to Mnuchin, it's unusual and unprecedented for the spouse of a Cabinet secretary to promote brands on social media.

"Glad we could pay for your little getaway. #deplorable," one Instagram user called "Jenni M" commented.

And then things went downhill from there.

It seems as if Linton took a quick peek at Jenni M's Instagram feed, making note of her family and children in an eyebrow-raising response:

"@Jennimiller29 cute!....Aw!! Did you think this was a personal trip?! Adorable! Do you think the US govt paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?! Lololol. Have you given more to the economy than me and my husband? Either as an individual earner in taxes OR in self sacrifice to your country? I'm pretty sure we paid more taxes toward our day "trip" than you did. Pretty sure the amount we sacrifice per year is a lot more than you'd be willing to sacrifice if the choice was yours. You're adorably out of touch. Thanks for the passive aggressive nasty comment. Your kids look very cute. Your life looks cute. I know you're mad but deep down you're really nice and so am I. Sending me passive aggressive Instagram comments isn't going to make life feel better. Maybe a nice message, one filled with wisdom and hunanity [sic] would get more traction. Have a pleasant evening. Go chill out and watch the new game of thrones. It's fab!"

After the showdown, Linton put her Instagram account on private, meaning only those following her at the time can now see the contents of her account.

This isn't the first time Linton has found herself in the middle of controversy. She came under fire in 2016 for her self-published memoir, "In Congo's Shadow," which detailed her time as a student in Zambia. She quickly withdrew the book from sale and donated any proceeds to charity.

Mnuchin and Linton tied the knot in late June in front of a star-studded crowd full of Wall Street's elite and Washington insiders, including President Trump and his wife Melania. The newlyweds actually met at a wedding in 2013 and got engaged just two years later. For more on their lavish nuptials, check out the slideshow above.
