Many merchants offer discounts aimed at students, whether on clothes, electronics, textbooks, or even movie tickets, although they're not always easy to find. Here are 40 discounts that can help college students save on the things they need and want while hitting the books -- you can also find those textbooks on the cheap as well.

The casual and professional clothing retailer provides a 15 percent discount to college students with valid ID on full-price items at J.Crew, J.Crew Factory, and J.Crew Mercantile stores. This offer is not available online.
Apple offers students discounted prices on a range of Mac computers and iPads for school, in addition to student financing options and discounts on AppleCare protection plans. Apple is also giving students who purchase eligible Macs and iPads a free pair of Beats headphones through Sept. 25.
Eligible students receive an additional 10 percent off previously discounted refurbished products, including notebooks, tablets, and desktops, from the HP Business Outlet. The program includes free shipping on orders over $100 and a 10-day return or exchange policy.

Adobe offers discounts on monthly plans that include access to all its applications, including Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Illustrator. The All Apps plan is available to students at 60 percent off, for $20 monthly. Additionally, Adobe offers the Photography plan, which consists of Photoshop CC and Lightroom for $10.
Students enrolled in eligible universities around the country can receive free shipping and a variety of discounts on laptops and tablets from Lenovo. Eligible schools can be found by searching Lenovo's website.
Sony provides discounted pricing on its products to qualified students through partner resellers such as Amazon and Newegg. Registering on the Sony website lets students shop through resellers for Sony software at discounted rates.
Microsoft gives students attending eligible schools a minimum 10 percent discount online. Once students register through the Microsoft Store online, the discount is applied automatically during checkout.
The Economist offers students a discounted rate for subscriptions to print and digital versions of the magazine. The least expensive option is the digital-only subscription, which is available at $12 for the first 12 weeks and $34 every 12 weeks thereafter.
Students can take advantage of reduced rates on the print and digital versions of The Wall Street Journal. Digital-only or digital-plus-print subscriptions are offered at the same semester rate: $15 for 15 weeks, or opt for a year for $49.
