The 'floor is lava' challenge is the latest teen trend and game taking over Snapchat and Instagram

In 2010 we had "icing." Then came "planking." Then, of course, the infamous ice bucket challenge. If Snapchat and Instagram are any indication, this summer's hottest viral prank could be the "lava challenge."

It's a simple game. A friend shouts "the floor is lava!" and you have exactly 5 seconds to get to higher ground. This could mean climbing a store shelf, hopping on a fire hydrant or jumping on the counter of a fast-food restaurant.

The game itself has been around on schoolyards for years — you probably remember it from your childhood — but a pair of friends named Kevin Freshwater and Jahannah James helped it reach viral new heights.

Kevin and Jahannah have been playing the game for a white, but earlier this week Kevin posted a compilation of their videos to Instagram and it took off.

Their lava challenge video has now been viewed over 8.5 million times on Twitter and has collected countless more views on Facebook.

Most teens participating in the challenge have begun recording their own "floor is lava" videos on Snapchat.

Snapchat itself produced a live story on Thursday afternoon, documenting some of the best lava challenge snaps from around the world.

Whether the momentum lasts remains to be seen, but in the meantime, it can't hurt to keep an eye out for higher ground.
