We tried the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino so you don't have to

Updated

Starbucks' Unicorn Frappuccinos have officially joined the ranks of spaghetti donuts in this year's ever-growing list of Instagram food trends.

According to a press release by the company, the whimsical drink is made with a "sweet dusting of pink powder, blended into a crème Frappuccino with mango syrup and layered with a pleasantly sour blue drizzle," all topped off with vanilla whipped cream and a sprinkle of sweet pink and sour blue powder topping.

People are showing up in droves to get their hands on the limited edition beverage, and it isn't exactly hard to understand why -- the fruity concoction is almost too pretty to drink.

But as beautiful as the Unicorn Frappuccino may be, one still has to wonder -- how does it taste?

Luckily for you, we tried it out so you don't have to.

Unluckily for us, it turned out to be a bit more of a beautiful nightmare than the sweet dream we'd been hoping for.

The Experience

To give Starbucks credit where credit is due, they're handling this bizarre craze like true professionals.

Our barista didn't even laugh at the ridiculous nature of our order -- one grande and one tall Unicorn Frappe with no lids -- until we started cracking up.

After we paid for our tooth-aches-in-a-glass, we scooted down the assembly line to watch the artists in action as they carefully crafted our magical Frappuccinos.

The barista used so many bottles and shakers of colorful syrups and powders that it almost seemed inconceivable the drinks would look like anything more than a kindergarten arts and crafts project.

But to our surprise, they came out stunning.

The Taste

After a 15-minute photo shoot to ensure everyone had snapped a perfect Instagram, it was time to actually taste the pretty beverages.

The first sip wasn't too shabby, as it was mostly made up of Starbucks' classic Frappuccino crème base with just a hint of mango goodness.

But after giving the cup a big swirl to enact the "color-changing" properties, the taste of the "pleasantly sour" blue drizzle became way too prevalent.

The sour flavor, which was more reminiscent of a sour blue raspberry candy than a unicorn-flavored anything, completely overtook the sweetness of the crème and mango base and almost made the rest of the drink curdle like expired milk.

After three of four more unpleasant sips, we decided to bring the rest of the drink back to the office and make everyone on our team try it so we wouldn't have to suffer alone.

Pink drink victim #1 Kelsey Driscoll thought the sugary concoction tasted like a "sour garden," while victim #2 Morgan Giordano argued the flavor was more similar to that of a Paris Hilton perfume.

According to our boss, if ring pop ice cream existed, this is definitely what it would taste like.

Kelsey Weekman pretty much hit the nail on the head with an A+ reference to the 1983 film "A Christmas Story."

Needless to say, it seems that no one here enjoyed tasting this rainbow.

But if you refuse to listen to our advice and still want to try the Unicorn Frappuccino for yourself, you better gallup to your nearest Starbucks ASAP.

The mythical beverages are only available Wednesday, April 19, through Sunday, April 23, while supplies last.
