America's most popular dog breed shouldn't surprise you

America's most popular dog breed shouldn't come as a surprise. The Labrador retriever still leads the pack!

The breed has been the most popular dog in America for a record-breaking 26 years in a row, according to the American Kennel Club's rankings.

It makes sense seeing as how labrador retrievers are great family pets, they always want to please and they're pretty cute.

However, they're also so much more than that. They can sniff out bombs and are good guide dogs for the blind. It's ironic that the lab has topped the AKC's list for decades, but has never won the Westminster dog show.

German shepherds take second place on AKC's list, but snagged Best in Show at the 2017 Westminster.

Golden retrievers are the third most popular dog breed, followed by the English bulldog and, in fifth place, the beagle.

The beagle is the only breed to place in the top 10 every decade since the AKC was founded in the late 1880's.

Another highlight of this years round-up was that the Rottweiler got its highest ranking in 20 years coming in at 8th most popular.

No matter where your dog's breed lands on the list, he or she is likely number one to you.
