Ivanka Trump brand sees 223 percent 'purge surge' on thredUP

Updated

thredUP released its "Purge Surge" lists Wednesday, which highlight the brands and styles that saw the highest increase in rate at which they were sold to thredUP in 2016.

In case you don't know how thredUP works, it's essentially an apparel marketplace where consumers buy and sell secondhand clothing. First, the brand encourages sellers to do the D.O.T. test: Ensure that the clothing you're planning on sending is Defect-free, On-trend and from Top brands.

Once your pieces are received, any that meet the "strict quality standards" (real talk: they typically accept less than 40 percent of the clothing they receive) are "immediately listed on thredUp." You will receive money for items that the brand believes will sell quickly as soon as they are processed. For apparel that thredUP decides may take longer to sell, you will receive payment upon sale. If you want unselected pieces back, that's an option, too. Otherwise, they're passed onto third-party sellers or textile recycling partners and repurposed.

So, back to the news at hand ...

See below for the "Most Purged" brands of 2016 -- A.K.A. the brands that fashionistas were seemingly eager to get rid of. According to thredUP, data shows that peak spring cleaning happens between February 15 and March 28. During that time last year, thredUP saw a 67 percent increase in items sent and roughly 125K "Clean Out" bags were sent.

You'll notice that Ivanka Trump landed at No. 7 on the list, which doesn't come as much of a surprise, considering the controversies and boycotts surrounding her brands during and after the 2016 election. On the other hand, though, according to CNBC, "Online sales for Ivanka Trump's brand increased 200 percent in the month February." Learn more about that in the video above.
