PetSmart launches historic campaign to feed the nation's dogs and cats

Updated

Did you know that nearly 7 million pets in North America enter shelters every year? Many shelters are not equipped to handle so many cats and dogs. Pet food is expensive --sadly, some shelters and food banks struggle to feed their animals.

PetSmart is looking to change that. Currently, only 20% of PetSmart's charity partners receive pet donations. Furthermore, only 8% receive subsidized food for their animals.

The company just launched a new program called buy a bag, give a meal. For every bag of dog or cat food purchased through December 31, PetSmart will donate a meal to every pet in need.

Take a look at their inspiring campaign:

"At PetSmart we love pets and we believe they make us better people. To celebrate our 30 years of continued commitment to helping pets in need every day and as a trusted partner to pet parents everywhere, we want to celebrate by giving back even more," said Eran Cohen, the chief customer experience officer of PetSmart.

They estimate that with this new program, nearly 60 million meals will be donated to shelters, organizations and food banks across the country. It's the biggest philanthropic program in the company's 30 year history -- and it's undoubtedly going to save lives.

Said Dr. David Haworth, president of PetSmart Charities:

"These food donations are key to helping animal welfare organizations free up precious resources so they can continue their life-saving work, as well as deliver pet food as an option at food banks and pantries. We look forward to seeing the impact this significant pet food donation will make to close the gap on this critical and essential need in animal welfare."

Pet parents "can rest assured they are also helping feed pets in need. When their pets eat, pets in need eat, too. It's that simple," said Cohen.

PetSmart is making it easy to help: You can buy a bag of food either in person or online. We can't wait to see the impact this fantastic initiative will make.
