Want surgery? Then put out that cigarette!

The Charlotte Observer recently published an article about a man who was turned down for back surgery because he's a smoker.

It's one case, but the article explains why it does make sense.

See more on smoking:

An orthopedic surgeon explained the results of surgery aren't as good when someone is a smoker, because smoking effects your blood flow.

The article also quotes the findings of a Global Spine journal article that found smokers don't do as well when it comes to recovering from certain spine injuries.

Smoking doesn't only negatively effect back surgery. The American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society also warns that smoking can make it harder for skin to heal after a surgery.

Then there's the American Society of Anesthesiologists that report that they've witnessed massive benefits when patients don't smoke before a surgery.

There you have it, another study that shows how bad smoking is for your body.
