TripAdvisor names the world's best beach in 2017 Traveler's Choice ranking

Whether it is dunes of squeaky white sand or stretches of shattered black lava, there is only one word to describe unique beaches -- paradise.

Yes, you could head to the closest shore or lake to lie by a body of water, but the world's most beautiful beaches offer something special.

TripAdvisor, the travel planning and booking site, released its 2017 Travelers' Choice for Beaches awards. Across every coast and continent, only 343 beaches landed on lists based on the quantity and quality of traveler reviews and ratings on TripAdvisor, gathered over a 12-month period.

This year, the title of world's best beach went to Brazil's Baia do Sancho -- and it is clear why. First, you must climb down a challenging steep metal ladder clinging to the side of a cliff to reach the beach. But once your feet hit the white sand, you'll see that all your efforts were worth it.

The secluded, quiet stretch is pristine and its cove is wrapped in lush vegetation. The turquoise waters are a warm snorkeler's paradise. TripAdvisor reviewers have spotted turtles, sharks and fish breaking up the blue backdrop with pops of electric colors.

One beach from the United States landed a spot atop the 10 best beaches list. Siesta Beach in Siesta Key, Florida, has been called 'excellent' by thousands of TripAdvisor users. You can walk for miles on the wide sandy stretches and watch pods of dolphins spring from the waves. However, the sand is the reason why Siesta Beach is a favorite among travelers. The powdery, almost flour-like grains are actually made of quartz. It is so clean and fluffy that it squeaks when stepped upon and never gets too hot, even on the steamiest Floridian day.
