Jenny Packham Fall 2017 is a love note to British culture
Jenny Packham's Fall 2017 collection is called the Heritage Collection -- and it felt like a love note to the U.K.
"I think at the moment a lot of people are thinking about what it means to be British," Packham told us backstage, "So in a way I've done quite a cliche British collection. People have used tartans a million times, but I wanted to take it into our world of evening wear with this beautiful silk chiffon."
The collection also included artwork by London artist Magda Archer on silk shirts and accessories, in quintessentially British images of corgis and pearls, which were a really fun addition. "I think it's also very British to be a bit eccentric!" the designer said.
The collection had a distinctly youthful vibe -- both in color and silhouettes -- which was another element of British culture she wanted to bring to life.
Along that youthful vibe, Packham artfully mixed silk t-shirts with ball gowns or embellished pencil skirts, and she turned the top of a dress into a t-shirt made of a shimmering black tartan plaid. She also mixed in quite a few moto jackets, giving it a bit a punk vibe -- in her own way. It was refreshing, modern, and just so pretty.
There were plenty of classic Jenny Packham looks: a sparkling halter with a deep-v that will probably be on the red carpet in t-minus one week, and gorgeously pristine dresses that had just the right amount of lace and embellishment that we can see the Duchess of Cambridge requesting, um, tomorrow.
But the amazing thing about a Packham show is that while the collection comes together as one, each look is entirely unique. While there will be themes or elements that run throughout -- such as the embellished corseted bodice that we see on two dresses, or the waved sheer pattern seen in both reds, golds and blues -- each piece is one of a kind.
"For me, every piece is special," Packham said. "I think that's what's different about our collection, because people might only buy one piece from us per season, and they want each one to be different."
