NYFW: Milly channels 'fractured' energy in Fall 2017 ready-to-wear collection

Updated

Michelle Smith, co-founder and creative director of Milly, named her Fall 2017 ready-to-wear collection "Fractured" -- and it's symbolic of how she was feeling when she conceptualized the line. As she puts it:

"During the time I was designing this collection, the world changed dramatically. The election left me feeling defeated, especially as a woman."

Smith channeled that dispirited energy into somber -- yet bold -- fall pieces that she unveiled Friday, ranging from a grey oversized, wool hoodie and grey and black wrap coats to velvet, gunmetal and fringed slip dresses. Perhaps the most literal representation of Smith's title and message was one look that combined a torn, cropped cable sweater with a bronze, velvet slip dress with a "fracture" right in the middle.

"There is strength in acknowledging the fractures. Feeling them," Smith affirmed. And she did just that with this body of work (not without occasionally offering subtle glimmers of hope with playful materials and shapes -- and a joyful run down the runway with her children at the show's end).
