Kate Middleton and Princess Diana both signed this hat, and now it could be yours

Well! This is a bit of an unusual one. The auction house Guernsey's is putting up a big celebrity collection in March, in which they're placing close to 800 different items on the block. The items range from two Dale Earnhardt cars to Marilyn Monroe's "signature red chiffon wiggle dress" to a baseball signed by John F. Kennedy, Jackie Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon (yes, it's a truly wide array).

One of the items up for auction, though, will be of particular interest to fans of the royal family. It's . . . uh . . . a velvet hat signed by both Princess Diana and the Duchess of Cambridge. Per Guernsey's, the "simple hat" was signed by "two of the world's most elegant and beloved women," as Diana's signature reads "Much love, Diana," while Kate appears to have simply signed it with her name. The hat is "beautifully displayed in a House of Windsor glass case measuring 25 x 25 x 9 in.," in case you were having trouble fully visualizing what this thing would be like to behold.

What is the story behind this hat!?!?!?! Did either of them ever actually wear it?!?! (It does not appear that the hat in question is the one that either of them is wearing in the two photographs on the plaque.) Did it belong to a random royal fan, who managed to get it signed by both Diana and Kate thanks to some determined tracking? Or did Kate find it while going through some old belongings William had stored in an attic, deciding, after assessing it, "Hey, why not, I'll sign this thing, too!"?

Just one hat, but so much intrigue.
