A secret trick to score even more savings is this two-step approach:

1. Purchase a discount gift card for the retailer you plan to shop with to score an instant average savings of 10% or more.

2. Combine the gift card with a promo code or digital rebate at checkout.

Do your research! Always search the web for what's on your shopping list. Chances are you might find them at a lower price somewhere else.

Be sure to follow all your favorite retailers on social media. They sometimes will post special sales and offers exclusively for their followers on Black Friday.

If you plan to hit the malls when they first open, start in the back of the store and work your way towards the front, moving in the opposite direction of most other shoppers.

A great way to save money is by setting a budget for yourself and making sure you stick to it. I recommend purchasing a gift card with the amount you intend to spend on holiday gifts and leaving your credit card at home so you're not tempted to overspend.

Have a list ready of what you're buying and for whom. The earlier you get started, the more likely your favorite retailers will have the item in stock and you won’t have to pay for expedited shipping if you’re shopping online.

For the stores on your list offering a free gift with purchase, hit those first to ensure you get one while supplies last. You can also then give that item as a gift to someone on your list!

Leave the kids at home to avoid getting roped into additional unnecessary spending, allowing you to stick to your list and your budget.
