How to wear the season's hottest trend: Velvet

Never have I ever been so happy it's Monday. I feel like yesterday's travel adventure with three children deserves its own post so I won't get into it here. Partially because I am still recovering and mostly because looking in from the outside, it's pretty hilarious and a cautionary tale worth telling. If you want to get the CliffsNotes version, it's all on Snapchat.

So yeah, coming to you this morning from snowy Vermont where we are spending the week with my parents. And in anticipation of holiday party season, I'm going to be sharing a few party looks. Plus, I'm sharing a bunch of other options you can snag in time for your work party, holiday dinners with friends or your big family gathering.

Today I'm sharing this seriously comfy velvet shift. I think technically it's a tunic but I'm 5'8″ and it's long enough to be a dress too. The good thing is you can wear it over tights with booties for something fancier, throw it on with leggings and boots for a more casual holiday gathering or go somewhere in between like I did with over the knee boots (Remember these from last year? Still so good.).

Since velvet is back, just try to forget those giant velvet holiday dresses you wore back in the day (don't act like you didn't have one) and focus on the good stuff out now. Whatever way you want to try out the trend, I've rounded up some options – I'm especially loving some of the shoe options.

"This is a favorite of mine because it’s a classic wrap dress in luxe velvet with subtle print and color combo that is wearable year-after-year. I wanted to edge it up a bit with my spiked Sam Edelman pumps and panther chain necklace but keeping my other jewelry pieces simple." - Savvynista

"These blue velvet pants are so fun! I love wearing them because they’re so unexpected. From far away they could look like jeans, but up close no siree! " - M Loves M

"I paired it with these suede BR clearance find booties & this cute & super cheap Target satchel. I feel like a medieval princess, not gonna lie." - Allie Wears

A velvet dress is the perfect thing to add a little luxe to an outfit all while still being able to keep warm this chilly fall season.

"Even though the temps are dropping and the leaves are all about gone, this look is still a great one for the coming months. Just switch out the tall socks for tights and the light sweater for a turtleneck and you have yourself a winter-ready outfit." - Covering the Bases
