How to layer for the pre-winter cold

In the past few days, the weather has dropped. You've been outside - you know this. On Friday, I left work without a jacket, wearing a skirt. On Saturday, I walked outside to have a ton of snow whip me in the face. Ah, midwest winters – always keeping us on our toes. Although it's a similar story every year, I still find myself frantically going back and forth between wearing my heavy winter coat and putting it away because it's really not that cold anymore. Sigh.

If you're like me and not quite ready to be toting around a bulky winter coat, there are plenty of alternatives. I'm quite the layering guru myself, so I try to strategically layer my way through mid-December to delay the winter coats as long as possible. Lately, my go-to layering pieces are my denim jacket and one of my trusty down vests. I usually layer the denim jacket over a turtleneck or sweater and pop on the vest over top. For a day of shopping, I went with my Hunter rain boots, but if it's snowy in your hood – make sure you go with some Bean Boots!
