You may know designer Isaac Mizrahi best for his appearances on Lifetime's "Project Runway All Stars," Bravo's "The Fashion Show" or his own series for both Oxygen and the Style Network -- but now, you'll know him as the designer of your next show-stopping work ensemble (trust us!).
The acclaimed designer unveiled his brand-new cosmopolitan collection, IMNYC, at the Lord & Taylor flagship store in NYC Thursday night, and we had the pleasure of speaking with him all about it before the fashion presentation with Lord & Taylor's Fashion Director, Stephanie Solomon.
Can you tell us a little bit about this new collection and how it's different from your past work?
Well, it's a new venture for me. It's called IMNYC, which stands for Isaac Mizrahi New York City. It's almost like a response to social media, in that girls see what's happening right away and everybody follows a million different style blogs. Everyone knows what's going on and there are so many crazy trends, and what we aim to do is cut a swath through them and go to the heart of the ones that we believe in and the ones we think are not just flash-in-the-pan trends.
We're hoping this brand is going to become a friend to this woman who is so confused. What I'm trying to say with this collection is that you can trust that we are not swayed by micro trends. We're kind of [in] it for the long run. So if you buy a blouse or a skirt -- even at these fantastically low prices -- you're always going to have it. You're going to have it for ten years, and it's going to look great.
That's the thinking behind it. And if you look at some of the shoes and some of the plain little tops, you go like, "Yeah, I can't live without that" for whatever the price is. And then you'll see how great and fresh it feels when you wear the stuff, and you'll see how it's going to last in your wardrobe. I'm very proud of the quality -- always -- and so there it is!
Go ahead and start shopping some of the collection -- but don't forget to read on for more of our chat with Isaac!
With social media, we see a lot of celebrities and we're inspired by them, so do have a celebrity who you would like to see wear the new line?
Oh, of course I do! You know what, there's a lot of people I would love to see in it. I immediately think of Amal Clooney, because she's so stylish.
I think it's something that looks appropriate for a girl in her prime, so that could be someone in her 20s or someone in her 50s.
We already had the Emmys, but with award season coming up, do you foresee any big trends or colors?
Yes, I do! You know what, I think that tulle is going to be a really big thing -- giant, giant, giant tulle. I follow Hamish Bowles -- he's the one person I follow. And there are these two dresses from Giambattista Valli, [and] they were these giant, crazy tulle dresses. And I was like, "If I were Cate Blanchett, I would know what I was wearing to the Oscars this year."
Parma violet -- this beautiful, crazy, lustrous, pale violet color. That's what I think. Violet, pink, orchid. That's what I see is going to happen. I'm not kidding -- premonition. That's my premonition.
