This facial expression is deemed one of 'the weirdest things' we can do

Updated

A wink: It can go either way. Either you can pull it off seductively, or look as if there is something in your eye. You never know how it's going to go down.

And because of its ambiguity, researchers have deemed it one of the 'weirdest things humans can do with their faces'. Unlike a smile, which is natural and less ambiguous, a wink is essentially a 'distortion of natural behavior'.

Professor Robert Provine explained to New York Magazine that "winking involves the hijacking of the biological maintenance behavior of blinking in the service of social signaling." How weird?

And even weirder is that people who can blink (Hint: Not everyone can, no matter how hard you try!) can either blink with their left or right eye, not both. You're not an ambidextrous winker, because dominant eyes do exist!

Given how much work goes into winking, it makes sense it's one of the more ambiguous expressions out there!
