Behind the collection: NYFW Designers share their spring inspiration

While New York Fashion Week might take place in during a single week (well, technically 8 days), the designers and their teams are working on the collections for several months leading up to the big presentations. Before the shows kick off this Thursday, we tapped some of our favorite designers to give us a sneak peek -- a look behind the curtain at the inspiration behind their latest creations.

"Iris" is the word for Marchesa (and you know Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig will gorgeously bring that to life!) while Monique Lhuillier gives us a glimpse with "ethereal modern romance" and Rebecca Minkoff was inspired by "1970s California surf culture."

Jacob Blau

"I am inspired by today’s new cool girl that wants to dress up and has the means to approach formality, but has few options that appeal to her. Using the 1950s teddy girl and the late 20th century UK rave culture as a research point, I love the exclusivity. The youthful trouble-free glory and the sense of refined decadency of Edwardian fashion these sub cultures used rebellion to shock their parent’s generation. Using my specialty in menswear tailoring, my capsule collection will conjure a romantic yet nonchalant vibe of the new commanding woman who’s always looking for the next party; illustrating this poignantly modern yet historical narrative. Her counterpart guy might mean business and knowing what he’s doing, but she calls the shots."- Jacon Blau

Jacqueline Chen

"My inspiration came from cold hives: an allergy to coldness and wind that I suffered when I was 11 years old. My collection of evening wear illustrates the experience, desire and adaptation during those two years." - Jacqueline Chen

See the collection: September 8th at 12:30 pm

Jiyeon Lee

"The song 'Take Five' is syncopated jazz music. The collection reflects the uneven beats from standard jazz music." - Jiyeon Lee

Duston Jasso

"My Supima capsule collection is called 'The Aureate' meaning: gilded in gold. It tells the story of an angel that has fallen to earth." - Duston Jasso

See the collection: September 8th at 12:30 pm

"For SS17 unisex designer TELFAR continues to refine and expand his core practice of taking what is most utterly normal in American style — and double down on it: Deconstructing its form, reimagining its function, and projecting it into the future. The result is a speculative wardrobe for the future-present: a style-fi uncanny precisely because it’s so familiar." - Telfar

See the collection: September 9th at 9pm

Jeffrey Taylor

"This is a lush eveningwear collection that reflects the Tibetan culture and tells the story of Tibetan women and their coming of age with a passionate color palette, sensual floral prints and bold lines." - Jeffrey Taylor
