A beloved family dog has died while saving an 8-month old baby from a house fire.

Erika Poremski, the mother of the baby, said she had just stepped outside to her car when her Baltimore home went up in flames.

She said she desperately tried to get back in the house to save little Viviana who was trapped inside, but wasn't able to do so.

Firefighters said when they arrived they found the family dog, Polo, covering the baby's body.

Fortunately, the baby only suffered burns on her arms and sides thanks to Polo's protection.

The family has created a GoFundMe page to help cover the medical expenses.

The fund has already raised over 28-thousand dollars.
