This sweet pooch has been to hell and back, but has finally found the loving family he deserves.

Anubis was found living under cars in Cairo after his muzzle had been cruelly cut off, leaving him permanently disfigured and struggling with serious health problems.

Rescuers in Egypt believe Anubis, named after the ancient Egyptian god of the underworld, was mutilated by thieves when he was working as a guard dog, and may have suffered on the streets for eight years until Good Samaritans stepped in.

The sweet pup was flown to the United States by Special Needs Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation in the hopes that they could help find the perfect family for him. He spent several months with a loving foster family in El Paso, Texas, getting used to his new surroundings.

But when Kelly Hutson, from Spring, Texas, heard Anubis' story -- she knew instantly she wanted to welcome him into her home and heart forever.

"I just fell in love with him when I saw his picture ... I just kept going back and reading his story and finally I said something to my husband and we decided to put in an application for adoption," Hutson told TODAY.

And in July, Anubis happily joined the Hutson family.

Hutson reports that Anubis isn't timid, and told TODAY he eats in an "ant-eater-like" fashion, scooping up dog food with his bottom jaw and tongue.

"I spent a lot of time with him those first few days, just sitting on the floor with him and loving him," she explained to TODAY. "All he wants is to be loved on, even after someone did that to him."
