Dogs are known as man's best friend, but then again, tons of our idioms make no sense.

But Dutch scientists put pets to the test, ranking 90 animals to determine which would make the best pet.

Their rankings were based on things like basic biology needs, danger they pose to humans and how they do in captivity.

Here are the top five:

5. Asian palm civet

4. Llama

3. Tammar wallabies

2. Agile wallabies

1. Sika deer

The results are frankly surprising, especially considering dogs, cats and rabbits didn't crack the top 25.

Apparently, as far as science is concerned, kitties aren't exactly the cat's meow!
