When it comes to bras, chances are you've been guilty of some pretty damaging mistakes.

Don't worry, though! You are not alone. In fact, more than 80 percent of women wear a bra that doesn't even fit properly.

Fortunately, there are some steadfast rules that can help better your love/hate relationship with your undergarments.

First and most importantly, get measured regularly! Lingerie stylists recommend you get measured every six to eight months.

Think about it: your body is changing constantly. Whether it's due to weight loss, weight gain or pregnancy, you need to be adapting your bra size accordingly.

That doesn't mean you should just tighten your straps to fix the problem. If your bra feels loose and you need more support, you won't get it from your straps. You need a perfectly fitting band, which does about 90 percent of the work.

If you are wearing a perfectly fitting bra but still have an issue with uncomfortable straps digging in to your shoulders, invest in a pair of shoulder cushions. These are a life safer.

Also, remember to wash your bras correctly. Do you remember the last time you washed your favorite bra, and how you went about it?

If you're throwing it in the laundry machine, stop! These need to be hand washed with a gentle detergent, and laid flat to dry after every three wears.

One of the most common mistakes women make is sleeping in a regular bra. While sleeping in a bra actually has its benefits, like keeping your breasts elevated and supported, it's better to opt for a sports bra. It's not only more comfortable, but will lengthen the life of your bra.

Remember, spending money a quality bra is a good investment, but so is the time it takes to properly care for them!
