Experts reveal best way to save avocados from going brown

10 Amazing Health Benefits Of Eating Avocados

Cinco de Mayo is all about the tequila and guacamole, if we are being honest.

Using Hass Avocado Board consumer data, Avocados From Mexico found that during the week of Cinco de Mayo, more than 39 million pounds of avocados, or 83 million individual avocados, are consumed.

A Hass avocado, the most popular variety sold in grocery stores, gets darker as it ripens. If you can press your fingers onto its skin and the flesh yields slightly to pressure, then it is ready for eating!

But what do you do if you cut open an avocado and your party guests can't stomach anymore? Once an avocado is sliced open and exposed to air, the fruit starts to oxidize and turn brown.

Avocados From Mexico offered its favorite methods of delaying this process. Either drizzle a citric acid, like lime juice or olive oil, over the remaining pieces. Then use a piece of plastic wrap to tightly cover the surface of the fruit.

Be sure to press the plastic wrap directly onto the flesh of the avocado to limit the amount of surface exposed to the air.

And thanks to trendy foods like avocado toast, you don't need to wait for just one week a year to savor the creamy, buttery food.
