Sick of being single? Here's one genius way to meet new guys
I have a friend who's one of those pretty much perfect women it's hard to believe is single. Thankfully, she doesn't find it annoying when I say that! She's smart, incredibly motivated at her job, and obviously gorgeous (her huge green eyes and shiny hair make that hard not to notice). We laugh a lot together, and everyone who meets her thinks she's the sweetest. Why is she still solo when she'd rather not be? We have a few theories, and to test them out, she's handing her love life over to me.
Because my friend has had a tough time romantically lately, she's gotten a little skittish about meeting new guys. When we go to bars, she thinks there's no way anyone will approach her-and if they do, it must mean something's wrong with them, right? She's shy, so approaching guys is out of the question, while dating apps seem kind of creepy to her. All of this means while she thinks the various pieces of dating advice I've offered her would be good for someone else, she's reluctant to try them on her own. But she's ready for a change.
Shortly before the new year, she Gchatted me this: "I'm thinking I might give you free rein over my dating life for four months, and I just do as you say." I almost had to pinch myself, because this sounded like a dream. "Are you sure you're ready for that?" I responded. Already, my mind was dancing with ideas. Grouper. Tinder. Hinge. Bar outings. Approaching men. Actually flirting!
"No, I'm not sure!" she said. "Haha. But I know I need it!" She went on to warn me that when January came, she'd tell me she didn't want to do any of my suggestions and I might have to be mean to her, but she gave me permission to do so. Tough love works sometimes, right?
Now that we're finally in January and I'm making my way back to NYC, I'm so excited to start our little experiment. I'm going to be working on her confidence just as much as her dating skills. I hope that, even more than making it easier for her to meet guys, this helps her realize that she deserves the world. When you're unhappily single, it can be so easy to forget that. Who better to remind you than your friend? They so often know what's better for you than you do (how many times did they warn you about your evil ex while you, completely hypnotized by his bedroom prowess, ignored them?). If you feel like you've exhausted every option, consider putting your most trusted, man-savvy friend in charge. You just might like what she comes up with.
