Photos: Man falls through roof of Topshop venue at London Fashion Week
"The show must go on," might not always be the best mantra. A man fell through the roof of the Topshop show space today during London Fashion Week, and many in the crowd were upset to see that the show continued as though nothing had happened.
It's pretty common for London designers to choose to show their collections in interesting -- albeit sometimes unfinished -- spaces (designers showing in New York City have started to choose unique locations as well). And yes, maybe these places seem like the coolest place to show a collection... but they're also dangerous. It all went down during the Fashion East show.
According to the Telegraph, "midway through the second collection, an un-named worker from an adjacent building fell through a corrugated plastic roof panel, hit a large metal pipe near the roof and then fell around 50ft onto his back, landing backstage." And while security began running and shouts were heard, the show kept going as though nothing had happened.
Police and paramedics were called and the man was rushed to the hospital, but that wasn't enough for some eyewitnesses, who were "totally bewildered" that the show kept going.
To be honest I'm pretty upset that the show carried on going. It was unfortunate, but we all saw the man fall. They could have stopped.- ZOE LONDON (@zoelondondj) September 16, 2014
Topshop's statement to Vogue on the incident left many unsatisfied:
What do you think? Should Topshop have stopped the show, or were they in the right allowing the show to continue?
There is a building site adjacent to the Topshop show space and a builder walked over onto the glass roof of our space and fell through. The way that the Topshop space is built, the walls that separate the catwalk and audience space from backstage don't go all the way to the ceiling, so people could see that something had happened, but it did not in any way endanger the audience. It didn't happen above people's heads and there was no one in the space where he fell.
We're aware that people are asking why we didn't stop the show, but it wasn't affecting anyone in the show space and he received medical attention immediately. At the moment he is being looked after by our team of medical staff who are always at the space.
