Why the '70s is the new 'it' decade
Say "l8r" to the '90s -- logomania, streetwear and all -- because there's a new fashionable decade in town: the '70s. And there's lots of proof.
Lately, we've seen a reemergence of models and celebrities with Jane Birkin bangs, including Camille Rowe, Joan Smalls, Jessica Chastain, Taylor Swift and Freja Beha Erichsen, which Vogue.com chronicled last week. There's the new popularity of bucket bags, fringed items and washed-out tees. There's Charlotte Gainsbourg's new collection with Current / Elliott, which – guess what? – is pretty darn '70s. There's Net-a-Porter's most recent edition of "The Edit" showcasing Behati Prinsloo in exclusively '70s-styled attire with the bangs to match. And then, at the top of the 1970s pyramid, is Nicolas Ghesquière's fall 2014 collection for Louis Vuitton that featured an A-line silhouette, suede detailing, intarsia sweaters and a muted color palette that would fit in just as easily in Eric Foreman's basement as it would on a magazine cover.
So why the time travel? #Normcore. No, really. While one aspect of fashion's most beloved-and-hated trend is firmly rooted in the mainstream logos popularized in the '90s, it all goes back to the idea of casual clothing that is understated and blends in, which is what the majority of '70s folks wore. The look is more Mariel Hemingway in "Manhattan" than Bianca Jagger at Studio 54, which makes it easier to adapt for today. All you need to try it out are some luxurious basics in relaxed silhouettes – just be sure not to go overboard. Pair your flares with a simple button down and your fringed boots with a minimalist top.
