Fruit cups sold at Walmart recalled due to listeria concerns

A voluntary recall of Country Fresh containers of fruit sold at Walmart stores over a possible listeria contamination has been expanded.

The original order recalled just sliced watermelon but has now grown to include cut and/or sliced apples, grapes, mangos, pineapples and cantaloupe, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The packages cover “best if used by” dates between Oct. 3 and Oct. 11 and were shipped to Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems,” according to the FDA. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

No illnesses have been reported yet, according to the FDA.

Anyone who has already purchased one of the recalled fruit containers should throw it away.
