What a $250,000 home looks like in four major U.S. cities

The thought of spending $250,000 on a single purchase can make anyone sweat. But a home is an investment that can last generations.

Unfortunately, sometimes it’s only worth as much as its zip code. In The Know has taken a look at what a quarter of a million dollars can get you in four U.S. cities.

Low on supplies? We’re regularly updating our list of retailers that are still selling household essentials, including toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

First, take a look just outside of New York City at Long Beach. The generous budget will get you a modest but cozy 550-square-foot condo. A partial ocean view adds a charming touch to the one-bedroom setup. We’ll call it a sweet spot in a pricey area.

But if the east coast is not your thing, head out west to Santa Clarita. For the same price tag as that tiny condo, you’ll get an 809-square-foot townhouse with two beds and one bath. Be sure to factor in some of the local amenities. You’ll also have access to a pool, playground and boundless nature. The city is full of parks, biking and hiking trails.

Those seeking a little more legroom will want to head inland to San Antonio, Texas. There’s more space here than the two previous properties combined. This 2,913-square-foot single-family house has more than just curb appeal. It has six beds and four bathrooms.

For the more adventurous, try living on a houseboat in Portland. The 834-square-foot is less like a vessel and more like a house that floats. Not to mention it’s still larger than that Long Beach condo. The location promises excellent river views and is teeming with nature.

Purchasing a home is a big commitment but if you’re willing to relocate, you might be able to find exactly what you’re looking for.
