This taxidermist believes most people's perceptions of her job are all wrong – here's why

"I think a lot of people have misconceptions about taxidermists and that they're kind of sick or deranged people ... but I think a lot of it is actually pretty bright and sunny," says New York-based professional taxidermist Amber Maykut.

Maykut, who owns and runs Brooklyn Taxidermy, began her career about 10 years ago when she found a Monarch butterfly on a New York City sidewalk.

Maykut wanted to find a way to preserve and frame the butterfly and keep it in her apartment, which was her first foray into the art of taxidermy.

Her "passion" has developed into a career centered around "bringing things back to life, paying homage to ... creatures."

"At the end of the day, I think this job is really all about art and being creative being able to express yourself and being able to use art and sculpture to give something to the world."
