You can now request that your Uber driver kindly shut up

Have you ever wanted some peace and quiet in your cab, only to have your driver talk to you about the meaning of life? Well, Uber has just the solution to your problem.

The ride-hailing company announced several new features on Wednesday, including an option to tell your driver to — as Rihanna would say — shut up and drive, according to CBS.

In fact, customers who are willing to pay for a premium ride can enjoy a number of new perks, including luggage assistance and temperature regulation. But most will probably take advantage of the app's "Quiet Mode," which allows users to ask their drivers to skip the small talk and was created in tandem by the company and retail executive Martha Stewart.

"If you need to respond to emails or are in the mood for a nap, make your trip a quieter one with just one tap," Uber said. "If you're in the mood to chat, that's an option too."

Riders can also select an "Extended Pickup Period" option, which gives them more time to get to their car in case an unexpected delay occurs.

An Uber spokesperson told CBS that the company rolled out the new features based on feedback from its users, some of whom wanted their drivers to know their preferences before their trips started.

Stewart's partnership with the company stemmed from an unpleasant experience she had in November 2018. In a since-deleted Instagram post, she claimed she ordered the "most expensive version" of Uber's service but could not locate her first driver. The second driver reportedly waited for her in the wrong location, and the car was apparently "a mess inside and out."

"We partnered closely with [Stewart] based on her experiences with the premium service," the spokesperson said.
