Advanced ticket sales signal 'Captain Marvel' is hotter than 'Wonder Woman,' and trails only 'Black Panther' among superheros

“Captain Marvel” is the first major Marvel / Disney (DIS) superhero movie of 2019. It hit select theaters Thursday night, and pre-ticket sales signal that it's going to be a blockbuster.

While Fandango doesn’t release exact numbers on pre-sale tickets, the movie ticket website revealed that Captain Marvel is the best selling movie that has yet to hit theaters since ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. The Marvel movie crossover had an opening weekend with an astounding $257 million dollars domestically, before bringing in over $2 billion dollars in sales worldwide, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, which is the top worldwide gross of a comic book adaptation.

The latest Marvel installment starring Brie Larson is on track to bring in anywhere from $120 to $150 million dollars this opening weekend. That’s well above the $103 million dollars its DC counterpart Wonder Woman brought in domestically, before eventually grossing $821 million dollars worldwide, making it the 73rd best movie in terms of worldwide sales, as well as the 8th most successful superhero movie in the United States.

The only other single character standing in Captain Marvel’s way for bragging rights is her peer Black Panther. The Oscar winning Marvel blockbuster hit raked in just over $202 million dollars in its opening weekend.

Superhero movies are stronger than ever. Times have changed since box office disappointments from female superhero movies like Catwoman ($82 million dollars worldwide gross and $17.89 million dollars under budget) and Elektra ($56 million dollars worldwide gross and barely making a return thanks to foreign sales) are in the rear view mirror, and studios appear ready to try something different.

Regardless of whether or not you plan on seeing these films for yourself, it’s hard to deny that Disney’s $4 billion dollar acquisition of Marvel in 2009 is paying off.
