DraftKings offered bets on Oscar winners for the first time ever -- and the results may surprise you

Betting on sports events is an extremely popular pastime in America, but for the first time ever, DraftKings allowed users to bet on an awards show.

DraftKings, a fantasy sports platform, was granted permission by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement to allow its users to bet on the Oscars Awards Show. The newly-created betting event gave anyone in the state of New Jersey the opportunity to enjoy the 2019 Oscars in an innovative way. And while America hasn't had the longest history of legal betting, the results were far better than expected -- with a few surprise outcomes.

"After the Super Bowl is over, there's a dead period between the ending of the Super Bowl until the college basketball tournament starts -- about a three or four week [period]. So the Oscars were coming up and our team in New Jersey thought it'd be a great idea for us to get into something a little different," said DraftKings’ Sportsbook Director Johnny Avello. "There's a whole different group of people out there that are interested in entertainment and pop culture that may not be interested in wagering in sports."

Avello went on to talk about the near immediate response to the event. The team's approval process with New Jersey officials was fairly quick and according to Avello, within a week of the betting categories being posted on the app, users were already interacting and placing wagers.

The sportsbook company opened up betting for a range of categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor. Draftkings also offered odds on other categories including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Animated Film, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Visual Effects, Best Animated Short, Best Documentary Short, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Live Action Short.

The 91st Academy Awards took place Sunday, February 24, and users placed their respective bets in nearly every category. The largest winner on DraftKings Sportsbook took home $2,375 after placing a $500 bet on Green Book to win Best Picture.

With the success of the Oscars, Draftkings hopes to create more wagers surrounding more entertainment and pop culture events. In the meantime, however, the company is gearing up to create wagers for the popular college basketball tournament March Madness.
