With Hurricane Bud expected to make landfall in Baja, Calif. later this week, it appears that the 2018 hurricane season has finally arrived.
The news has left many bracing for the worst, after the U.S. faced a wave of very powerful — and expensive — hurricanes in 2017: Hurricane Harvey, which hit Texas with record floods; Hurricane Irma, which caused major damage to Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands; and Hurricane Maria, which has caused absolute devastation in Puerto Rico.
Powerful hurricanes wreak destruction on a massive scale, frequently causing billions of dollars in damage and altering the spending habits of ordinary people in a very real way. Louisiana is still receiving federal disaster aid nearly 13 years after Hurricane Katrina, the most expensive hurricane ever.
