The Swedish DJ Avicii, born Tim Bergling, has died at age 28. The Grammy Award-nominated Avicii was known for his hit songs “Levels” and “Wake Me Up.”

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii,” his publicist Diana Baron said in a statement reported by Billboard. “He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th. The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”

Avicii began releasing music in the 2000s, but he caught his big break with the song “Levels,” which was released in 2011 and reached No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart. He reached new levels of success with the release of the 2013 song “Wake Me Up,” which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It became the first electronic song to sell more than 4 million units in the U.S., Forbes reported, and has gone on to reach over 1.4 billion views on YouTube.

At the time of his death, Avicii’s net worth was $85 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Much of his wealth came from club and festival appearances, for which he earned six figures per performance, Forbes reported. In 2014 alone, Avicii earned $28 million.

Adding to Avicii’s net worth is his five-bedroom, seven-bathroom house in the Hollywood Hills, which he purchased in 2013, according to The Pinnacle List. He purchased the home for $15.55 million, according to Redfin.

Avicii released two full-length albums: “True” (2013) and “Stories” (2015). “True” went on to be certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, selling more than 1 million units.

Over the course of his career, Avicii had five songs place on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: “Wake Me Up,” “Hey Brother,” “Levels,” “The Days” and “You Make Me.” “Wake Me Up” and “Hey Brother” both reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

In addition to his two Grammy nominations for “Best Dance Recording” in 2011 and 2012, Avicii earned other top accolades during his musical career, including an American Music Award and a Billboard Music Award.

Avicii had suffered from health issues before his death. The DJ had acute pancreatitis, which was caused in part by excessive drinking, Billboard reported. He had his gallbladder and appendix removed in 2014, and canceled shows during his recovery period.

In 2016, he announced he was retiring from touring. “My choices and career have never been driven by material things, although I’m grateful for all the opportunities and comforts my success has availed me,” he wrote in a long note to fans on his website, according to Billboard. “I know I am blessed to be able to travel all around the world and perform, but I have too little left for the life of a real person behind the artist. I will however never let go of music — I will continue to speak to my fans through it, but I’ve decided this 2016 run will be my last tour and last shows. Let’s make them go out with a bang!”

His last tour appearance was in Ibiza, the millionaire vacation spot in Spain, in August 2016, according to Songkick.

Although Avicii stopped touring, he continued to produce music. “The end of live never meant the end of Avicii or my music. Instead, I went back to the place where it all made sense — the studio,” he wrote on his website. “The next stage will be all about my love of making music to you guys. It is the beginning of something new.”

His last release was the “Lonely Together (Remixes)” E.P., which featured mixes of his hit with Rita Ora. The E.P. was released in November 2017.
