Apple store evacuated and repairman injured after iPhone battery overheats

Roughly 50 people had to be evacuated from an Apple store in Zurich after a repairman was injured by an overheated iPhone battery.

The repair worker’s hand was slightly burned by the overheated battery, with Swiss police confirming the shop was evacuated due to the ensuing smoke.

Seven people in all received medical treatment, though none were hospitalized.

A police statement commends the staff for responding “well and correctly,” noting: “It sprinkled quartz sand over the overheated battery so that the smoke could be contained and sucked out after switching on the ventilation.”

The incident’s cause is being investigated by forensic specialists.
