Consumer Reports reveals the 10 best household glass cleaners

There can be few things more irksome than staring out at a perfectly placed window or glass door and noticing streaks all over the surface.

But as it is with most basic household items, figuring out which glass cleaner is the most effective can be a series of trial and error.

Thankfully, Consumer Reports has done the (quite dirty) work for you -- Because to see which glass cleaners really work, you have to make a mess.

Consumer Reports took clean panes of glass and coated some with outdoor grime (mineral oil, clay, and a solvent) and others with indoor grime (those ingredients plus synthetic skin oil to simulate greasy finger marks).

They subjected additional panes to repeated billows of tobacco smoke, letting them sit for three days to develop an amber film.
