How Kim Kardashian built her multimillion-dollar empire

Updated

Kim Kardashian is among the biggest names in television. The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star has successfully transformed herself from a TV personality to a business mogul.

From "breaking the internet" to getting paid to attend her own birthday parties and launching several businesses, this Kardashian has proven there's basically nothing she can't do. Find out how she built an empire worth millions.

Kim Kardashian Net Worth: $150 Million

Kardashian's salary from June 2015 to June 2016 is estimated at $51 million, according to Forbes. An expert at monetizing her fame, she brings in money from endorsement deals, clothing lines, book deals and a lucrative mobile venture.

A business plan covering many different bases has proven to be genius, as the Kardashian's net worth is $150 million, according to CelebrityNetWorth.com. This is ever-so-slightly more than her husband Kanye West's net worth of $145 million, bringing their combined fortune to $295 million.

Much of her success is likely due to the savvy dealings of her mother, Kris Jenner, who is largely credited with her family's rise to fame and fortune. Jenner has been deemed a "momager," as she manages the careers of all six of her children.

Despite her penchant for flashy, extravagant things, Kardashian appears to be a level-headed person. On "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," she's often portrayed as a homebody and has been vocal about abstaining from alcohol for most of her life, allowing her more time to focus on building a global empire.

Kim Kardashian Endorsements

A social media maven, Kardashian has 85.3 million followers on Instagram and 48.5 million on Twitter. Ever the savvy marketer, she gets paid up to $200,000 from companies to promote their products on Instagram, according to Page Six. She's also long been reported to earn $10,000 per tweet, but if she's earning $200,000 for Instagram, her Twitter rate has likely also increased in recent months.

The queen of endorsements has even found a way to get paid for attending her own birthday bashes. Kardashian has held several birthday parties at The Venetian's TAO nightclub on the Strip. In 2014, she was reportedly paid $500,000 to appear at the party and entertain guests for at least four hours.

A dream job for many, Kardashian has mastered the art of getting paid just for showing up. In 2014, she received $500,000 to attend the Vienna Annual Opera Ball as the guest of Austrian businessman Richard Lugner. Her standard endorsement fees typically range from $750,000 to $1 million, according to Radar Online.

In 2013, she reportedly earned millions from endorsements for Quick Trim; Fusion Beauty; Bravada; Fit In Your Jeans by Friday; Beach Bunny; Bebe; and Sephora. She also likely earned millions off sales of her three fragrances, Gold, Love, and True Reflection.

Kim Kardashian on 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians'

Currently in the midst of season 12, "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" made its debut in 2007. The show is slated to begin airing the second part of season 12 on Oct. 23. While the long-time reality series has been renewed for season 13, production has been halted since Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in Paris.

In early 2015, the Kardashian family reached an $80 million agreement — with ratings bonuses — to continue their hit show "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" for another three seasons, with an option for a fourth. Kardashian's salary is $15 million. Since viewers wanted a glimpse into the home life of Kardashian and her husband, she reportedly received a $5 million bonus for having Kanye appear on camera.

Beyond the family's flagship show, "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" has also generated numerous spin-offs that she's been involved with. She starred on "Kourtney & Kim Take Miami" from 2009 to 2013, and "Kourtney & Kim Take New York" from 2011 to 2012. She also appeared on Caitlyn Jenner's television show, "I Am Cait," and her brother Rob's show, "Rob & Chyna."

In addition to her various E! reality shows, Kardashian has also tried her hand at acting. She appeared in the 2013 Tyler Perry film "Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor" and four episodes of the television series "Drop Dead Diva," among other projects.

Kim Kardashian Businesses

Despite her many business endeavors, mobile might be this Kardashian's most successful. Forbes estimates 40 percent of Kardashian's salary comes from her mobile game, "Kim Kardashian: Hollywood," which generated a total of $71.8 million in 2015. Additionally, her app Kimoji sells for $1.99. She also has a $2.99 subscription-based app.

Kardashian partnered with her sisters to design the defunct Kardashian Kollection for Sears, which brought in $600 million in 2013, earning the trio a combined $30 million. Kim, Khloe and Kourtney also have a children's clothing line, Kardashian Kids, for sale at Babies"R"Us.

The trio also owns Dash boutique — which has locations in Los Angeles, Miami and New York — but their earnings are unknown. Kim's clothing line isn't the only way she earns money from apparel sales; she also sells her discarded clothes, shoes and accessories on eBay. As of 2014, she had sold over $212,000 worth of goods on the site, donating around $21,000 to charity and pocketing the rest.

In 2015, she went on to release a book of selfies, titled "Selfish." Her exact earnings are unknown, but the book costs $9.97 and 100,000 copies were sold as of August 2015, when it was in its fourth round of printing. This wasn't the Kardashian's first foray into the literary world, though. She co-authored the books "Kardashian Konfidential" and "Dollhouse" with Kourtney and Khloe for an undisclosed sum.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Marriage

Kanye proposed to Kim Kardashian in October 2013 at AT&T Park in San Francisco. The rapper rented out the stadium for his elaborate proposal, which cost more than $6.2 million, according to an estimate from Vanity Fair. This includes the projected cost of the 15-carat diamond engagement ring he presented his now-wife.

The couple married on May 24, 2014, in Florence, Italy. The couple's lavish $12 million wedding weekend included a rehearsal dinner at Versailles in France and a glam squad for guests to get their hair and makeup done.

Their taste in real estate is equally lavish, as they purchased an $11 million Bel-Air, Calif., mansion in 2013 and spent more than $2 million renovating before their 2016 move-in. They also own a $20 million Hidden Hills, Calif., estate that they purchased in 2014 and have been doing extensive renovations on since.

The couple has two young children. Their daughter, North, is 3 years old and their son, Saint, will be 1 on Dec. 5.

Kim Kardashian's Previous Marriages

While she finally found love with Kanye, the rapper isn't the Kardashian's first husband. At the age of 19, in January 2000, she eloped to Las Vegas with Damon Thomas, a music producer. The couple filed for divorce in 2003.

In May 2011, after six months of dating, Kardashian got engaged to Kris Humphries, an NBA star playing for the New Jersey Nets at the time. Her then-beau enlisted the help of her mother to plan the proposal, where he presented his bride-to-be with a 20.5-carat ring.

The couple married a few months later, on Aug. 20, 2011, in a lavish wedding that cost an estimated $10 million — and Kardashian earned a reported $2 million off the occasion. Unfortunately for the couple, they barely made it past the honeymoon, as Kardashian filed for divorce just 72 days later.
