Woman hospitalized from Chipotle wants free burritos
A Chipotle customer who got painfully ill from eating at the restaurant had a strange request as part of her settlement, more burritos!
The company was happy to honor the request and sent her "a couple dozen" coupons for free burritos, according to her lawyer.
Even though the 19-year-old female customer had gotten sick, along with more than 500 other people during a string of food borne illness outbreaks at Chipotle across several states last year, she shows a remarkable sense of brand loyalty.
The woman's lawyer, Bill Marler, who has been dealing with food-safety cases for years states, "I have never had a client ask for that.
As strange as it may have sounded to Marler, he adds that of the 96 people he represented in similar cases with Chipotle, several who had gotten sick returned to the chain.
The woman in this particular instance recently settled her case for an undisclosed amount, as well as the free burrito coupons.
The idea that she wanted more burritos may sound funny, but her $40,000 medical bills after being hospitalized with E. coli are no laughing matter.
Despite multiple promotions and free food giveaways, Chipotle's sales have plummeted following the series of outbreaks involving salmonella, norovirus and E. coli.
According to Business Insider, same-store sales have declined for the last three straight quarters.
Despite this, Chipotle plans on hiring 5,000 people through their second annual National Career Day September 28th.
