School bells are ringing, evenings are a bit chillier, and leaves are about to turn: September has arrived.

After a long, hot summer, the cool breezes of fall are welcome. And you can celebrate the new season all month long with freebies.

Following are nine free things you can get in September.

1. Free Oreo Frappe at Dairy Queen — Sept. 6

Just as the last heat of summer begins to fade, Dairy Queen is offering a free frozen treat. Stop in at a participating location between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. and get a gratis Ultimate Oreo Frappe.

Dairy Queen describes the treat as "a combination of coffee, ice and Oreo cookie pieces blended with creamy DQ signature vanilla soft serve and crowned with whipped topping and Oreo cookie pieces."

2. Free toy for kids at Lego — Sept. 6-7

If your little ones were less than thrilled about returning to school, help them get in the autumn spirit with a free toy.

On Sept. 6 and Sept. 7, your kids can visit a Lego store, build a Lego school bus and take it home free. The event is open to children ages 6 to 14 for up to four kids per household. Reserve your spot in advance, as quantities are limited to about 120 toys per night, per location.

3. Free taco for educators at Rubio's — Sept. 8

Are you a teacher? If so, we offer a sincere thanks for all you do to educate America's children.

In honor of your hard work, Rubio's is giving away a free taco on Sept. 8. According to Rubio's, "all educators, school faculty and staff are eligible," but you will need to show some form of school ID to score your freebie.

4. Free breakfast sandwich at Chick-fil-A — through Sept. 10

You can get a free breakfast sandwich at America's favorite fast-food restaurant when you download the Chick-fil-A app by Sept. 10. The offer is open to patrons who are at least 13 years old and who both download or update the app, and create a Chick-fil-A One Account through the app.

Freebie choices include:

  • Egg White Grill

  • Chick-n-Minis (3-count)

  • Chick-fil-A Chicken Biscuit

Happy birthday to the National Park Service, which turns 100 this year! In honor of this historic event, the service is offering free admission to national parks on various days throughout the year. One of those days is Sept. 24, National Public Lands Day.

6. Free dinner for kids at IHOP — through Sept. 25

After visiting a national park or building a Lego school bus, your kids are likely to have worked up an appetite. So, why not make it two freebies in one day by taking them to IHOP. Through Sept. 25, kids under 12 will get a free entree with the purchase of an adult entree.

The catch is that the offer is only good from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. each day, but this is still a dynamite deal for parents on a budget.

7. Free meal and drinks at Chipotle — throughout September

September marks the beginning of football season, and millions of families will root on their favorite NFL team every Sunday. Those who are not partial to pigskin might use Sunday to pack up the kids and enjoy a fall drive.

However you plan to celebrate Sunday, consider capping the fun with a meal at Chipotle. Each Sunday in September, kids 12 and under eat free when you buy "a burrito, bowl, an order of tacos or salad," according to the Chipotle website. You'll also get a Dragons Love Tacos activity sheet.

In addition, students can get a free fountain drink or iced tea throughout the month simply by showing their student ID when ordering a burrito, bowl, order of tacos or salad.

8. Free trip to the museum – Sept. 24

Chances are good that you splurged on family fun at some point during the summer. So, go ahead and give your wallet a break during the fall by enjoying some no-cost free time with the kiddos — or even a quiet day by yourself.

On Sept. 24, you can visit museums across the country for free as part of Smithsonian magazine's Museum Day Live! campaign. Visit the Smithsonian website to find participating museums and print out a ticket for two free admissions.

9. Free coffee — Sept. 29

As temperatures fall, the desire for a warm cup of joe rises. On Sept. 29, celebrate National Coffee Day with a free or reduced-price cup of coffee at coffee shops nationwide.

Most shops have not yet announced their deals. We will post a story with a roundup of all the best offers closer to the magic day. In past years, Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Caribou and many others have offered food and drink deals on this day.
