Facebook Inc. Wants to Know You Better

Don't say Facebook Inc. isn't listening to you. Soon, the social network will roll out a feature that allows its mobile Android and iOS apps to tap into the mic of a handset to identify and post what music you're listening to or TV show you're watching. Fool contributor Tim Beyers explains the implications in the following video.

Some will no doubt see the feature as an invasion. Others, as an enhancement. Whatever the ratio, Facebook product manager Aryeh Selekman wrote in a blog post that the trends point toward users sharing more. Selekman wrote:

You may have seen a friend post a photo after a rough workout with a "feeling proud" icon. Or you've seen your friend check in at a coffee shop "drinking an iced coffee." In the last year, people shared more than 5 billion status updates that included these kinds of feelings and activities, sparking conversations in a more visual way.

Adding the ability to share music and TV tastes -- what you're listening to or watching at any given moment -- fits this same mold. But the news is also bigger than that. Rather than displaying ads based on what you say you like (i.e., "likes," group membership, etc.), Facebook will be able to display ads or offer products based on what actually entertains you on a daily basis. Tim says that's a win, for both users and investors.
