The 2015 GMC Canyon: Will Pickup Buyers Care?
General Motors took the wraps off of the 2015 GMC Canyon at an event in Detroit last Sunday. Like its corporate sibling, the Chevrolet Colorado, the Canyon is an all-new midsize pickup that is set to come to market for the 2015 model year.
We -- the Motley Fool's John Rosevear and Rex Moore -- were in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show, and we were able to get up close with GMC's new pickup and to talk with some of the folks behind it.
First things first: the Canyon isn't a little truck. It's surprisingly big -- in fact, as we were walking to the GMC display, it took us a minute to distinguish the new Canyon from the full-sized 2014 Sierras parked next to it. But it's definitely smaller, as you can tell when you sit in it. The Canyon's interior is well-finished, and it's reasonably roomy -- but the interior definitely lacks some of the easy elbow room that you'll find in a Sierra or Chevy Silverado (or a Ford F-150, for that matter).
GMC is presenting the Canyon as part of a "three truck lineup" that includes the new-last-year 2014 Sierra and its heavy-duty variants. That differs from the strategy we're seeing Chevrolet follow with the Colorado, which is positioned more as a sport truck, an alternative to an SUV for active, outdoorsy buyers.
Check out the short video below for a closer look at the Canyon and our impressions from the show floor in Detroit. Then scroll down to leave a comment and let us know: What do you think of this new truck? Is it likely to be a hit, or is it a product in search of a market?
