'One America' Tour Emphasizes Power of Volunteerism to Better Serve Chicago's Youth

Kerry & Sarah Wood receive Daily Point of Light Award; Volunteers assemble 120 teacher resource kits

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today retired Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood joined Interim Executive Director of Chicago Cares Jenné Myers; Founder of Embarc and Harper High School teacher Imran Khan; poet and activist Malcolm London; freshman at DePaul University and former Harper High school student Cassandra Murff and two hundred community members and leaders to discuss how volunteer service can expand education opportunities to Chicago's youth. The third tour stop of the national 'One America' tour, led by Points of Light and JPMorgan Chase, also honored Kerry Wood and his wife Sarah with the Daily Point of Light award for their continued efforts to support Chicago's youth through the Wood Family Foundation.

After receiving the award, Kerry Wood helped volunteers from Chicago Cares and JP Morgan Chase build resource kits for Chicago public school teachers. "Sarah and I are honored to receive the Daily Point of Light Award today and we look forward to continuing our work to build better futures for our city's children," Wood said.

"The beauty of volunteerism is that you don't have to be a star athlete to be a hero. Every single person can make a difference," said Tracy Hoover, President, Points of Light. "Through the One America campaign, we are asking people across this country to be heroes by stepping up and serving where they are needed most. America needs volunteers now, more than ever before."

"JPMorgan Chase has roots in Chicago going back to 1863 and we are proud to continue our commitment to the community," said Glenn Tilton, Chairman of the Midwest, JPMorgan Chase. "Over the past seven years we have donated $24 million to keep our city's schools strong and safe. With One America we look forward to empowering a new generation of volunteers and promoting fresh approaches to service."

The One America tour is a nationwide effort that brings powerful voices and unlikely pairs in politics, entertainment and sports together with the goal of inspiring Americans to unite in service to their communities. The initiative leverages volunteers in service projects to tackle three major issues: promoting education, ending hunger and protecting the environment. The next tour stop will be in Miami on October 17, 2013.
