Newport Hits Estimates, But GAAP Results Lag Last Year's
Newport (NAS: NEWP) reported earnings on July 31. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended June 29 (Q2), Newport met expectations on revenues and met expectations on earnings per share.

EPS came in at $0.20. The five earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $0.20 per share. Non-GAAP EPS of $0.20 for Q2 were 33% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.30 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.07 for Q2 were 71% lower than the prior-year quarter's $0.24 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 42.6%, 90 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 4.2%, 320 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 2.0%, 400 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. (Margins calculated in GAAP terms.)
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $142.6 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.26.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $562.5 million. The average EPS estimate is $0.96.
