Digital Benefit Advisors of Virginia Drives Rapid Growth by Combining Local Expertise with National Platform

Firm Announces New Partnerships, Endorsements, Products

RICHMOND, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- With the addition of 1,500 new clients and nearly doubling its employee base, the Virginia division of Digital Benefit Advisors (DBA) ( has rapidly expanded thanks to a unique value proposition and delivery platform that has stimulated growth through partnerships, combining business with other firms and endorsements.

This spring, DBA Virginia entered into a partnership with the Medical Society of VirginiaSM Insurance Agency (MSVIA) and integrated business from two other Richmond-based agencies. Additionally, the firm acquired two new endorsements that provide significant future growth potential.

"DBA's unique capabilities and powerful business model offer distinct advantages during an era of change for the employee benefits industry," says Tim O'Shea, managing principal of DBA Virginia, part of a national network of experienced, local market experts. Since early 2011, the group has nearly doubled annual revenue, increased from 30 to 55 employees and added about 1,500 new employer client relationships.

Digital Benefit Advisors also has renewed and created a long-term agreement with Dominion Analytics, the Richmond firm that developed patented, decision-support models for use in the health insurance and benefits evaluation process. This agreement gives exclusive access to DBA nationally for use of these tools. DBA Virginia supports several Digital offices and clients across the country using these models, further fueling local growth.

"We have the expertise and resources to help employers navigate health care reform, plus the flexibility to offer partnership arrangements to other benefits and insurance firms," adds O'Shea. "These dynamics are resulting in opportunities for our firm to grow strategically as we address emerging market needs."

This summer the Richmond office will move to Deep Run III in Henrico County near its current headquarters in Glen Allen, Va., to consolidate local operations and provide space for continued expansion. DBA Virginia will continue to serve clients from its current offices in Charlottesville and Roanoke.

MSVIA, which serves Virginia physicians, partnered with DBA to handle the agency's complete employee benefits caseload -- from sales to customer service.

"With changes mandated by the Affordable Care Act, DBA is strategically positioned to offer our customers resources that would have been challenging to amass on our own," says Rufus Phillips, Medical Society of Virginia executive vice president. "Our partnership with DBA enhances our ability to serve Virginia physicians and provide them with the support they need during this time of change in health care."

MSVIA continues to operate its robust property and casualty division, which offers professional liability insurance and other ancillary products.

In addition to this significant partnership, DBA Richmond recently integrated Seven Pillars, Inc. of Richmond into its small group unit and reached a partnership to manage the employee benefits business of Westover Bon Air Insurance, a Richmond property and casualty agency. John Hastings, who founded Seven Pillars in 2003, has joined the DBA staff, extending the advantages of the new firm to his extensive client base.

In another development - in response to a new law in the Commonwealth - DBA VA was selected by the Virginia Association of Counties Risk Management Programs (VACoRP) to assist in the development of an employee disability product, including marketing and ongoing consulting for Virginia municipalities. This product is being introduced now for a January 1, 2014, effective date.

Finally, the Associated General Contractors of Virginia (AGCVA) has endorsed DBA Virginia as its employee benefits provider. DBA has a strong record serving professional associations. Besides the MSV and AGC relationships, the firm also is endorsed by the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.

DBA Virginia represents thousands of employers in the evaluation, planning and implementation of their benefit programs. Established in 2002 as Dominion Benefits, the firm was acquired by Digital Insurance in 2011. Strategic Employee Benefits, an affiliate of the Virginia group of Northwestern Mutual, was acquired in early 2012 and merged operations with DBA Virginia.

DBA combines the commitment of experienced, local market advisors with the sophisticated technology and innovative resources of a respected national company. Employers receive access to a broader variety of carriers, dynamic tools, proprietary products and the ability to effectively navigate the complexities of health care reform. One significant advantage includes direct policy holder access to a Customer Advocate Center, where knowledgeable and licensed Digital representatives answer benefits and policy questions, enabling employers to free-up overworked HR departments.
