Tony nominations announced: Full list of 2020 nominees
After an unprecedented Broadway season cut short by coronavirus, the 2020 Tony Awards nominations are finally here.
“Jagged Little Pill,” “”Moulin Rouge: The Musical,” and “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” were all nominated for best musical, while best play will be a contest between “”Grand Horizons,” “The Inheritance,” “The Sound Inside,” “Sea Wall: A Life,” and “Slave Play”
James Monroe Iglehart, who won the 2014 Tony for best featured actor for his role as Genie in “Aladdin,” announced this year’s nominees Thursday morning on the Tony Awards YouTube channel.
The cutoff for nominations is Feb. 19, so a show must have opened before then to be eligible. Due to the shortened season, categories may have fewer nominees than normal or some may be skipped entirely.
No date has been set for this year’s ceremony, but sources say organizers are tentatively planning for the first half of December. Most award shows this year have gone virtual due to social distancing guidelines around the country, and sources say Tonys organizers intend to incorporate live or pre-taped performances of some kind.
