Kanye West slams magazine over net worth estimate: ‘No one knows how to count’

Kanye West is officially a billionaire, but he’s not ready to celebrate.

Instead, the 42-year-old is criticizing Forbes, the magazine that recently estimated his net worth at approximately $1.3 billion. The calculation came after West granted the publication an “authentic numeric look into Kanye, Inc.” according to CNN.

West, who criticized Forbes in 2019 for previously failing to acknowledge his billionaire status, wasn’t happy with the result. After the number was made public, the “Jesus Is King” rapper reportedly sent a text to a Forbes representative that claimed he was worth far more than $1.3 billion.

“It’s $3.3 billion since no one at Forbes knows how to count,” the text read, according to Forbes.

The financial magazine is standing by its estimate, though. Forbes wrote that “given the illiquidity” of West’s assets, he received a “50 percent haircut” in the publication’s final count. Additionally, Forbes found at least $100 million in debt, which it also subtracted from the total.

But the publication also acknowledged that West’s claims of a higher net worth are not uncommon among certain celebrities. In particular, the magazine compared him to Donald Trump, who has consistently protested his Forbes listings over the years.

“For years, Forbes had an informal ‘Trump rule’ — take whatever the future president insisted he was worth, divide by three, and start honing from there,” Forbes wrote. “Welcome to the ten-digit club, Kanye. You may not like our number, but you’ve joined the highest company in that regard.”

West’s now-official status is, objectively, elite. In 2019, Forbes counted just 221 billionaires in America, compiling a list that also included the rapper’s sister-in-law, Kylie Jenner.
