How Drake’s record-breaking ‘Toosie Slide’ came to be

Drake’s latest song might have already broken records and gone viral on TikTok, but it’s not what he originally had in mind.

The rapper knew he wanted his next song to be an homage to the moonwalk, so he asked a choreographer to come up with moves that paid tribute to Michael Jackson’s iconic dance.

Toosie, an Atlanta-based dancer and influencer, took that guidance and created an entirely new dance. It was so infectious that Drake named the song after his choreographer — and thus the “Toosie Slide” was born.

The dance is relatively simple, and Drake and his co-writer Ozan Yildirim conveniently included the basic steps in the chorus.

“It go, ‘right foot up, left foot slide, left foot up, right foot slide,'” the lyrics say.

The dance itself is a bit more complex than just lifting your leg and sliding around, but thousands of TikTok users have built on that foundation, adding their own flair to Toosie’s choreography.

Some realized the dance was a tribute to the moonwalk all along, and incorporated that into their videos.

The song itself is a huge hit. It skyrocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 immediately after its release.

According to Billboard, that’s yet another a new record for Drake — he’s now the first male artist to have three songs debut at No. 1.
