Taylor Swift opens up like never before in trailer for Netflix doc: 'I need to be on the right side of history'

The trailer for Taylor Swift's upcoming Netflix documentary, Miss Americana, debuted on Wednesday, and it previews a raw, never-before-seen look at the behind-the-scenes goings-on of Swift's life and career, showing that the "You Need to Calm Down" hitmaker is opening up like never before.

The Lana Wilson-directed documentary, which will premiere on Thursday, Jan. 23, during opening night at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, promises to touch on Swift's Kimye-fueled fall from grace, her guarded Reputation-era comeback, her decision to finally speak out publicly about her personal politics and ultimately finding happiness going into her current Lover album cycle.

"Throughout my whole career, label executives would just say, 'A nice girl doesn't force their opinions on people. A nice girl smiles and waves and says thank you,'" Swift recalls in the trailer. "I became the person everyone wanted me to be."

"Nobody physically saw me for a year, and that was what I thought they wanted," she says later. "I had to deconstruct en entire belief system, toss it out and reject it."

Miss Americana will hit Netflix on January 31.
