As 2019 comes to a close, here are all the wildest celebrity comebacks of the decade

The rise of "cancel culture" may have done some reputation damage, but by and large, the past ten years have been pretty good to celebrities.

As the world moves from one decade into the next, we're taking a look back at just how much things have changed for a number of famous faces. When we entered 2010, Hollywood was a pretty different place: Franchise fans were all about "Transformers," not Marvel, and dominating the music charts were the Black Eyed Peas. (These days, excitedly blasting "I Gotta Feeling" at a party will just get you a lot of vaguely annoyed looks.)

From athletes to actors to pop stars, these were the biggest celebrity comebacks of the decade. Cheers to redemption!

Shia LaBeouf

Shia LaBeouf was the highest-grossing actor of 2009, but within just a few years, he would essentially find himself out of work thanks to several arrests and a subsequent entrance into rehab. But in a particularly moving development, the actor's stay in treatment led him to write the screenplay for "Honey Boy," an autobiographical story of his childhood in the spotlight. The movie has generated Oscar buzz, and LaBeouf has even publicly thanked one of the police officers who arrested him years back, citing that moment as being crucial to his eventual recovery.

Tiger Woods

The first half of the decade was not good to Tiger Woods, although it can certainly be argued that he brought the issues upon himself. In early 2010, the pro golfer saw his career in shambles in the aftermath of a dramatic cheating scandal that blew up his marriage. He laid low for quite some time but resurfaced with yet another rough headline in 2017, when he was arrested for driving under the influence. In addition to these setbacks, injuries also forced Woods to undergo multiple serious knee and back surgeries.

But, remarkably enough, the end of the decade would mark a career —if not lifetime — high for Woods when he conquered the 2019 Masters. Then, in May, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Michael Keaton

Zero disrespect to Michael Keaton, who ascended to stardom in the 1980s with "Beetlejuice" and "Batman" and continued to work steadily in the following years. But it wasn't until 2014's "Birdman" that he got some long-overdue respect as a dramatic actor. Word of Keaton's casting was initially perplexing, prompting jokes and goofy commentary about the film, but he would ultimately shut down critics with an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. While he didn't win that category, "Birdman" did win the Oscar for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

Britney Spears

"If Britney Spears can get through 2007, you can get through today" remains one of the most overused "jokes" on social media. (Is a distraught person's mental breakdown... funny? Debatable.) When we entered this decade, Britney was carefully returning to the spotlight, even making a fun appearance on "Glee." It would draw the show's highest ratings of all time, a clear indicator that fans were more than ready for a Britney comeback. Since then, she's performed sold-out tours and become one of the most popular and beloved celebrities on Instagram.

Admittedly, the past year has been a bit up in the air with Brit; she unexpectedly canceled her Last Vegas residency, has been in and out of some kind of treatment and entangled in several legal battles, including one related to custody of her children. Even so, there's no disputing that unlike eleven years ago, public sympathy is in her corner.

Winona Ryder

Who would've expected Winona Ryder to become one of the buzziest stars of the decade? Not us, and we loved "Edward Scissorhands"! Although she was a major celeb in the '80s and '90s, Winona's career stalled in the early 2000s in large part due to a shoplifting arrested that damaged to her reputation. Eventually, 2010 brought new life to her résumé with "Black Swan," and six years later, "Stranger Things" came along and that was that: She's officially back on top.

For what it's worth, Winona co-starred alongside Michael Keaton in "Beetlejuice," so maybe there's just something about that film that's both cursed and blessed.

Robin Wright

No dramatic downfall here: Robin Wright simply had a slow few years. The early '80s and '90s were very good to her: She starred in the cult classic "The Princess Bride," and then she received Golden Globe and SAG nominations for her role as Jenny in "Forrest Gump." But the following years just wouldn't deliver the massive roles many expected she would land.

That all changed in 2013 when "House of Cards" hit Netflix. In addition to being a scene-stealer when the show starred Kevin Spacey, Robin ascended to become the main character of the entire program. Now with countless accolades under her belt, including five consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress, she's one of the most widely-respected actresses in the TV world today.

Betty White

Again, no drama, but people need to remember that Betty White didn't become Betty White until pretty recently! Everyone assumed that "Golden Girls" would be Betty's biggest moment in the spotlight. But today, at 97 years old, she might just be more famous than ever. A 2010 Snickers commercial featuring Betty reminded everyone just how funny and talented she still is, and just like that, her career was back in action. Her popularity transcends demographics; everyone adores her, from elderly men to teenage girls.

What's next for Betty now that she's staged such a comeback? Her 98th birthday, which will be on January 17, 2020.
